Invitation to RAPIMAN Medical Workshop

New techniques in computer-assisted surgery, computer-aided design and the manufacturing of implants have been introduced over recent years, and are gaining more and more popularity amongst surgeons and engineers alike. Everyday work in maxillofacial, orthopaedic, and other surgery has evolved from solely manual expertise to computer-assisted surgery.

In order to more deeply explore and more widely apply this new and exciting method for helping patients more interdisciplinary cooperation is needed. To that purpose a special medical workshop will be organised in the frame of International Conference on Additive Technologies, which will take place in Hotel Mercurre Wien Westbahnhof, Vienna, Austria.

During the workshop the participants will have the opportunities to work on real medical cases, using dedicated software tools for surgical planning and the creation of patient specific implants and instruments. The idea of a practical and application-oriented medical workshop is to bring together surgeons and engineers who would work hand in hand to create an interdisciplinary incubator of new ideas.

The purpose of this workshop is to provide a comprehensive overview and hands-on experience of computer assistance in the design and manufacturing of craniomaxillofacial and orthopedic patient specific implants.

The workshop will be guided by experienced experts such Prof. Jules Poukens from University of Haselt, Belgium, who is amongst the best known surgeons using additive manufacturing in their everyday praxis, and who implanted the world's first 3D printed entire mandible replacement implant.

Another expert who will share his experience and ideas with the participants of the workshop will be Mr. Andy Christensen, founder of Medical Modeling, a company based in Golden, Colorado, who has helped at many surgical operations throughout the history of his company.

Attending the workshop
The workshop will take place on October 15th at the venue of the iCAT conference. Its intention is to enable every participant to become familiar with the 3D operation planning tools and with the process of an implant's creation. Therefore the number of participants will be limited and the organising committee of the conference reserves the right to refuse any applicant on the "first come first served" basis, without further explanation. The participants will have to use their own laptops to which they will download and install the needed software prior to the conference. We have organised temporary licences for all the participants. The minimum configuration of the laptop should include 2GB of RAM, enough free space on a hard disk, preferably a dedicated graphic card and a reasonably big display.

More information about the iCAT conference, medical workshop, room reservation for the participants of the conference, etc. can be found on the webpage of the iCAT conference www.icat.rapiman.net.

Programme of the workshop
The workshop will consist of three parts. In the first part the planning software and the main principles of 3D virtual planning will be presented by Mr. Christoph Bichlmeyer from Materialise. In the second part the participants will get familiar with each other and with the special guests who will present their experiences with surgical planning and production of patient specific instruments and implants. In the last part the participants will perform some practical work on maxillofacial and orthopedic cases.

The detailed programme can be found here.

At the end of the workshop the participants will join an open discussion about the workshop's results.

The workshop is suitable for, but of course not limited to, cranial-maxillofacial surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, maxillofacial prosthodontists, biomedical engineers and engineers with medical interest.

The workshop will be a great opportunity to share and exchange knowledge and ideas about its topics and to broaden the interdisciplinary experience.

Workshop fee
The workshop fee is 300 EUR if paid before June 30th and 350 EUR if paid after June 30th.

The workshop is free of charge for the participants of the iCAT conference. Please register on-time. Number of participants is limited.

The fee includes participation at the workshop, refreshments during the workshop and a temporary license for the planning software.
